Transporting and installing arcade machines requires careful planning and execution to protect your valuable investment from damage. Proper handling ensures these often-heavy and delicate pieces of gaming history remain in perfect working order. Here are the best practices to follow.

Preparation and Packing

Before moving, thoroughly prepare the machine. Unplug all cables and power cords. Remove any loose components, such as the marquee light, control panel, or coin box, and pack them separately in bubble wrap. Secure the monitor by using a monitor shipping kit, which typically includes foam blocks and straps to prevent internal movement. For long-distance moves, wrap the entire cabinet in moving blankets and secure them with stretch wrap to protect the exterior finish from scratches and dings.

Transporting the Machine

Arcade cabinets are top-heavy and awkward. Always use a dolly or hand truck with straps to move them. Tilt the cabinet back gently onto the dolly and secure it tightly with straps to prevent tipping. At least two people are needed for safe maneuvering. When loading into a vehicle, ensure the machine is upright and will not shift during transit. Pad it with more moving blankets to avoid contact with other objects. Never lay a CRT-based arcade machine on its back, as this can severely damage the monitor.

Installation and Setup

Once at the new location, carefully move the machine into its designated spot. Before plugging it in, inspect the interior for any components that may have become loose during transit. Reattach any removed parts. Place the machine on a level surface; use shims under the cabinet feet if necessary to prevent rocking. Ensure there is adequate ventilation around the machine to prevent overheating. Finally, plug the machine directly into a wall outlet, avoiding power strips, to ensure a stable power supply.

Final Testing and Maintenance

After installation, power on the machine and test all controls, buttons, and the display. Listen for any unusual sounds. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the interior with compressed air and checking for loose connections, will ensure long-term performance. By following these meticulous steps, you can safely transport and install your arcade machine, preserving its functionality and value for years to come.
