Updates or new games can be loaded by simply replacing or reprogramming this storage media, a faster and more cost-effective process than replacing physical ROMs.

Network connectivity has revolutionized arcade machine maintenance. Newer models often feature Ethernet or Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing operators to download and install software updates, security patches, and even entire new games directly over the internet. This enables remote troubleshooting, bug fixes, and the deployment of seasonal content without any physical intervention, minimizing cabinet downtime.

Multi-game arcade units, such as those featuring game boards with numerous titles pre-loaded, often handle additions through a menu system. While the core selection is fixed, some systems allow operators to unlock additional games via software keys purchased from the manufacturer. True game additions, however, still typically require a hardware change or a full software image update.

The fundamental principle remains that the core software is tightly integrated with the arcade system's specific hardware. Therefore, adding a new game often necessitates a compatible hardware platform. While updates can refine existing gameplay, adding a fundamentally different title usually requires a change in the underlying software package, reflecting the specialized, closed-system nature of arcade gaming.
