First and foremost is cleaning. Dust and grime are the biggest enemies of arcade cabinets. Regularly wipe down the exterior cabinet, control panel, and marquee with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For the control panel, a crucial task involves removing the buttons and joystick ball to clean underneath. Accumulated dirt and sticky spills can impede gameplay. Use isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the leaf switches or microswitches inside the buttons and joystick.

Next is monitor maintenance. For classic CRT monitors, image quality can degrade. Common tasks include adjusting the focus and screen voltage pots on the flyback transformer to sharpen the picture and eliminate a hazy overlay. Degaussing the monitor is also essential to remove color purity issues caused by magnetic fields. For newer LCD-based machines, simply ensuring the screen is clean and free of scratches is key.

The coin mechanism, or coin door, is another frequent point of failure. Coins, tokens, and debris can jam the mechs. Regularly inspect and clean the coin paths and switches. A small amount of graphite powder can be used to lubricate the moving parts, but avoid oil-based lubricants that attract dirt.

Power supply inspection is vital for stability. Over time, the linear power supply's electrolytic capacitors can dry out and fail, leading to random resets or graphic glitches. Visually inspect the power supply for bulging or leaking capacitors and test the DC voltage outputs with a multimeter to ensure they are within specification.

Finally, general inspection and connection checks are important. Periodically open the cabinet and look for any loose wires, especially on the control panel. Check for corrosion on the edge connectors of the printed circuit boards (PCBs) and reseat them to ensure a good connection. By performing these common maintenance tasks, you can significantly extend the life of your arcade machine and preserve its classic fun for years to come.
