Closely linked to corrosion is the persistent issue of high humidity. The moist air encourages the growth of mold and mildew on cabinets, particularly on wooden surfaces and artwork. More critically, humidity causes condensation inside the machine, which can short-circuit sensitive electronic components like monitors, power supplies, and PCBs. This constant dampness also degrades the quality of paper-based elements such as marquees and side art, causing them to peel or fade.

Furthermore, the abrasive nature of sand and fine particulate matter, often carried by coastal winds, poses a serious threat. These particles can infiltrate cabinet vents, clogging cooling fans and causing internal electronics to overheat. They also act as an abrasive on control panels, joysticks, and trackballs, leading to increased wear and tear on these mechanical parts. This combination of environmental factors demands a rigorous and proactive maintenance routine, including regular cleaning, the use of dehumidifiers, and the application of protective anti-corrosion coatings to ensure these classic gaming machines can withstand the harsh coastal conditions.
