Operating an arcade comes with the constant challenge of maintaining complex electro-mechanical equipment. The most prevalent issue is without a doubt monitor failure, particularly with aging CRT displays. These tubes and their supporting components, like flyback transformers and capacitors, degrade over time, leading to issues like no picture, discoloration, or rolling screens.

Following closely are problems with the game's controls. Joysticks take immense physical abuse, leading to worn-out microswitches, broken grommets, and stiff movement. Buttons also fail frequently, either becoming stuck from spilled drinks or losing their tactile response due to worn internal switches.

Another common headache is power supply failure. An unstable or dead power supply unit (PSU) can cause a myriad of problems, from the game not booting up to random resets and graphical glitches. Regular voltage checks are essential for preventative maintenance.

For coin-operated machines, the coin mechanism or coin door is a constant source of trouble. These can become jammed with foreign objects, bent coins, or simply wear out, preventing the machine from earning revenue. Accumulated dirt, dust, and grime are also silent killers. Layers of dirt can cause overheating of PCBs and power supplies, leading to premature component failure.

Finally, physical damage to the cabinet itself—from broken latches and locks to scratched artwork and cracked plexiglass—is an ongoing battle that affects both the functionality and aesthetics of the arcade machine. A consistent and proactive maintenance schedule is crucial for minimizing downtime and maximizing player enjoyment.
