What are the most common arcade machine monitor mounting solutions?

For arcade enthusiasts and restoration professionals, securing the monitor correctly is crucial for both safety and authentic gameplay. The mounting solution largely depends on the monitor type—vintage CRT or modern LCD. Here are the most common methods used.

The traditional and most iconic solution is the CRT Z-Bracket or J-Bracket Mount. These heavy-duty steel brackets bolt directly to the sides of a CRT tube. The "Z" shape provides a sturdy shelf for the monitor to rest on, while the "J" variant often uses a clamping mechanism. This system is incredibly robust but requires precise measurement and installation due to the significant weight of CRT monitors.

With the shift to modern displays, LCD VESA Mounting has become a standard. Most LCD panels have a 75x75mm or 100x100mm VESA pattern on the back. Universal VESA plates can be attached to wooden rails or metal crossbars inside the cabinet. This method is lightweight, versatile, and allows for easy adjustment and replacement of screens, though it may lack the classic look of a deep-set CRT.

A critical component for both CRT and LCD setups is the Monitor Bezel Kit. This isn't a mounting mechanism itself but a finishing touch that includes a glass or plexiglass overlay and a mounting frame. This frame often attaches to the cabinet and helps secure the top of the monitor, preventing it from tipping forward and providing a clean, professional appearance.

For those mixing old cabinets with new technology, Universal Adjustable Mounting Plates are a popular choice. These are typically custom-cut wooden boards or fabricated metal plates that adapt an original CRT bracket system to hold a smaller LCD. They offer flexibility and are a common solution for keeping classic cabinets functional without permanent modification.

Finally, the Direct Cabinet Mount is a simple, no-frills approach. For very sturdy cabinets, the monitor, especially a CRT, can be mounted directly to a wooden shelf or ledger board running the width of the cabinet. This is often reinforced with metal angle iron for added safety to prevent the heavy monitor from shifting during transport or vigorous play.

Choosing the right solution depends on your monitor type, cabinet design, and desired level of authenticity. Always ensure the mounting method is secure enough to handle the weight and vibration of gameplay.
